A History of coffee around the World

19th Century

1822

First espresso machine is invented in France.

1856

James Mason invents the coffee percolator on 26th December.

1942

During World War II, American soldiers are issued instant Maxwell House coffee in their ration kits. Meanwhile, back at home widespread hoarding leads to coffee rationing.

1975

When a severe frost his Brazil’s coffee lands in July 1975, the global coffee price doubled overnight and then soared to eight times its pre-frost level.

1984

The first Starbucks, modelled on the Italian espresso bars opens in Seattle. The store, named after the first mate in Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick”, originally began as a coffee bean store. In the April of 1984, a salesman for the store sets up an espresso bar in the back and later becomes the owner of the most well-known coffee shop in the world.

1995

By this time 400 billion cups of coffee are consumed per year. It has become a world commodity second only to oil.
